Summer Internship Spotlight: Entertainment
About Kathrin: Kathrin Seiler (’23) is a first year at UCLA Anderson and is originally from Switzerland. She graduated from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland with a Bachelor’s degree in Business (and minors in Law and Economics) and a Master’s degree in Marketing Management. Prior to Anderson, she worked in Marketing in various industries, ranging from luxury branding at the Swiss watch company IWC Schaffhausen, to Consulting, to Public Sector Marketing at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington DC, to her most recent experience in Airline Pricing Strategy at Swiss International Airlines. At Anderson, her goal is to pivot into the Entertainment industry. In her free time, she enjoys skiing, snowboarding, running, and playing tennis.
Working in the entertainment industry at NBCUniversal over the summer was a dream come true for me. Recruiting for entertainment can be a bit of a rollercoaster ride, as most recruiting happens beyond campus, and thus is quite unstructured. I was lucky to get my offer relatively early, but it is not uncommon to still be recruiting in May – with internships starting in June, this can be a bit of a stress test. In my 10-week summer internship, I am working in the Consumer Insights & Strategy team in Universal’s Filmed Entertainment Group. In that role, I get to dig into the data to find out who is interested in our movies, how people are watching the content and why, and then give strategic recommendations based on those insights. Besides thoroughly enjoying my work at the intersection of the analytical and the creative, I have also greatly enjoyed the perks that come with working in the entertainment industry. Over lunch break you get to walk on the lot and the film sets (stroll through New York Street or Little Europe for example, images below), see movie shoots and get to attend movie premiers. In general, the people working in the industry are very passionate about the product and that contributes to a very positive and collaborative work environment and culture at NBCUniversal, which I greatly enjoyed.
