First Year Perspectives: Asia to Anderson – Guide for your move from Asia to LA

About Aarya: With roots in the vibrant city of Mumbai, Aarya’s journey took an exciting turn when he moved to Hong Kong for his undergraduate studies at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He pursued his passion for engineering and management there, earning a B.Eng. in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. During his university years, Aarya’s leadership skills flourished as he served as President of Alpha Kappa Psi and Director of the MUN Club. He also earned the Raymond Cheung’s Scholarship for his innovative final-year project. Upon graduation, Aarya dove into the world of finance and technology, starting his career at Premier Technology Global before making significant strides at Galaxy Digital. Passionate about leveraging technology to revolutionize the financial industry, Aarya is now pursuing his MBA at UCLA Anderson. He intends to use his MBA to transition into a strategic role within a fintech company.
As I sit here in sunny Los Angeles, I can’t help but reflect on my journey from the bustling streets of Mumbai to the palm-lined avenues of UCLA Anderson. If you’re reading this from somewhere in Asia, contemplating the big leap to pursue your MBA dreams in the City of Angels, let me be your virtual guide on this exciting adventure.
The Decision: More Than Just Business
Like many of you, I initially wondered if an MBA was the right fit for someone with my background. Coming from an operations-heavy role in Hong Kong’s fintech scene, I feared I might be too niche for a general management program. But here’s the thing: Anderson thrives on diversity. Your unique perspective, whether it’s from Tokyo’s corporate world or Bangalore’s startup ecosystem, is exactly what makes the Anderson experience so rich.
The Move: From Dim Sum to Dodger Dogs
Let’s talk logistics. Moving continents is no small feat, but Anderson makes it surprisingly smooth. Start early with housing by applying for UCLA graduate housing and joining Anderson housing groups on Facebook and WhatsApp (like UCLA Housing, Rooms, Apartments, Sublets). I was lucky enough to get a coveted spot in the graduate housing at Weyburn Terrace (graduate housing application link), but many of my classmates found houses close to campus through social media channels. The international student office at Anderson is incredibly helpful with the F-1 visa process, guiding you through every step. When it comes to packing, remember that less is more. I opted to bring two large checked bags with essentials and shipped a few boxes of personal items ahead of time from Hong Kong. Many of my classmates chose to buy most of their necessities after arriving in LA, which worked well too. LA’s weather is perpetually perfect, so leave those heavy coats behind. Do bring some cultural items to share during the events hosted by the several identity clubs at Anderson!
The Culture Shock: It’s Real, But It’s Fun
Prepare for some amusing adjustments. Americans love small talk, so practice your elevator pitch and get ready to chat about everything from the Lakers’ latest game to your favorite boba spot. Tipping isn’t optional, so budget for it in every meal out. LA is a driving city, so if you’re not used to it, start practicing. Uber and Lyft are your best friends until you’re comfortable behind the wheel.
The Anderson Experience: More Than Just Classes
Anderson’s curriculum is rigorous, no doubt. But what truly sets it apart is the community. Anderson Career Teams (ACT) are your lifeline. Mine helped me navigate the transition from fintech to strategy through interview practice, hearing from second-year students about their strategy internship journeys, etc. Join clubs! The South Asian Business Association (SABA) was my home away from home. The Parker Career Series workshops are golden for understanding the nuances of American business culture.
The LA Life: Embrace It All
Los Angeles is a cultural melting pot, and you’ll find pieces of home everywhere. Sawtelle is perfect for when you’re craving authentic ramen. San Gabriel Valley offers some of the best Chinese food outside of China. And Korea Town has K-BBQ spots that taste almost as good as those in Seoul. But don’t just stick to the familiar. Hike to the Hollywood Sign, catch a wave in Malibu, or spend a day at the Getty. LA is yours to explore!
The Takeaway: You Belong Here
As I near the end of my second quarter at Anderson, I realize that my fears were unfounded. My background in Asian markets isn’t a hindrance; it’s an asset. In group projects, case competitions, and even casual conversations, my perspective is valued and sought after. To you, future Anderson student from Asia, I say this: Your journey here will be transformative. You’ll grow not just as a business leader, but as a global citizen. The skills you’ll gain, the friends you’ll make, and the memories you’ll create will last a lifetime. So pack your bags, bid farewell to your favorite street food vendor, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. Anderson is waiting, and trust me, you’re going to love it here.
