First Year Perspectives: Breaking Records and Building Community at 11,000 feet

About Trenton: Trenton calls Menlo Park, CA, home, though his journey has taken him all around California as well as Upstate New York. He holds a BA in Biochemistry from the University of Colorado Boulder and spent his pre-MBA career in the healthcare industry. Initially aiming to become a research professor, he worked in R&D to support the FDA approval process for cancer therapeutics and clinical research to better understand the progression of kidney disease. By getting more involved in the business side of running a lab, he realized his true interest lay in the delivery side of the industry rather than the discovery side. At Anderson, Trenton is focused on pivoting into a commercial role in healthcare, with a mission to improve patient access to innovations that redefine the standard of care.

Even before I stepped foot on campus, I knew exactly how I wanted to contribute to the Anderson community. When I was writing my application essays, I didn’t just mention the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC), I explicitly stated my goal to become the Director and eventually Vice President of Ski. Once I was admitted, I didn’t wait for the role to come to me. I spent my summer and early fall networking and introducing myself to as many OAC leadership members and other first-years interested in skiing as possible to ensure I could hit the ground running.

For me, this wasn’t just about skiing; it was about leadership through a social lens. This role seamlessly fits into my other positions at Anderson, all of which focus on the social aspect of the MBA experience. Whether it’s through the OAC or other club involvements, my goal is to create environments where people can step away from the rigors of the MBA curriculum and recruiting process to truly connect as human beings.

This year, our team took that mission to a historic level. We didn’t just want to host a trip, we wanted to expand the community. We ended up planning the largest Winterfest trip in Anderson history, bringing 220 people to Big Sky, Montana. To put that in perspective, last year’s record-setting trip to Steamboat Springs had 150 people. Increasing our capacity by 70 people required massive organizational efficiency and a high level of trust.

Executing the largest Winterfest in school history required a level of organizational synergy that only a dedicated team could provide. While I led some of these efforts, the success of Big Sky belongs to our entire leadership group. Between the peak of recruiting season and our demanding course loads, Chloé Fausa, Matt Roberts, and Kellie Barnum were instrumental in making this happen. Their ability to handle complex logistics and maintain the fun factor amidst late-night meetings and tight deadlines were the true engine behind this trip.

The perceived negatives of planning such a massive undertaking vanished the moment we arrived in Montana. Seeing 220 of my classmates—some who had never seen snow—dancing at après events, laughing, and smiling made every late-night meeting worth it. Seeing the non-skiers enjoying the mountain just as much as the experts reminded me why I put myself through the stress of planning, to see our community “Share Success” through joy and connection.

The best part? This is just the beginning. The OAC has so many more events in the works, and we are already deep in the planning stages for our upcoming trip to Mammoth. We are working to make it just as good, if not better, than Big Sky.

If you are looking for a community that isn’t afraid to go big, work hard for one another, and celebrate even harder, then you belong here with us in the OAC.
