Day in the Life: Healthcare Consultant at Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

About Serena: Born and raised with a passion for engineering and healthcare innovation, Serena came to UCLA Anderson to expand her strategic toolkit and accelerate her impact in the medtech space. Before business school, she studied Mechanical Engineering at Rice University and worked as an R&D Engineer at Becton Dickinson, where she helped design medical devices and contributed to numerous patent applications. This foundation fueled her interest in healthcare systems and strategy, leading her to spend the summer as a Consultant at BCG in Denver, working on a hospital cost-transformation case within the firm’s healthcare practice. At Anderson, Serena serves as President of the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC), EVP of Industry & Engagement for the Healthcare Business Association (HBA), and is a MedTech Innovator Fellow, continuing her commitment to driving meaningful, patient-centered innovation in healthcare.
This summer I interned as a Summer Consultant at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), based in the Denver office. I worked on a hospital cost transformation case as part of BCG’s healthcare practice area, focused on identifying new opportunities for cost reduction across the health system. My “module” (aka the sub-part of the project I was responsible for) spanned digital transformation strategies, vendor spend rationalization, and balance sheet optimization. The work was a mix of financial modeling and executive-facing PowerPoint decks used in client SteerCo meetings.
Although I was based in Denver, the rest of my team was primarily based in New York City so I traveled roughly 60% of the summer for co-location weeks in NYC or Chicago, which allowed us to collaborate in person. On non-travel weeks, I either worked from home or in the BCG Denver office. Fridays in the BCG Denver office were fun – everyone is back from their weekly case travels and comes into the office. The interns have a weekly touchpoint, there is time for coffee chats with colleagues, the office caters lunch, and there were often fun social events in the afternoon (i.e. bingo, drag show, ice cream social, whiskey tasting, etc.)
The work environment was fast-paced and intellectually challenging, but also collaborative and supportive. Even though I was added to a long-standing case (over a year in progress) which is pretty atypical, the team helped me get up to speed quickly. A highlight of the summer was attending a BCG healthcare provider summit, where case teams working on healthcare provider cases from across the firm gathered to share insights and learnings about the latest healthcare trends. It helped me learn more about the work within BCG’s healthcare practice and was a great opportunity to network with leaders in the field.
