Student Blogger: An Afternoon with the Women’s Business Connection

This post is a part of the Student Blogger series – each post is written by a current UCLA Anderson student, and provides first-hand perspectives and experiences about being an MBA student at UCLA Anderson.

This past weekend, the UCLA Anderson Women’s Business Connection (WBC) student club hosted a Career Afternoon and Mixer with recent Anderson alumni and sponsors. Even though the event took place on a Saturday (and we have midterms coming up next week!), there were 80+ students in attendance. All of us were eager to network with women from different industries and learn about personal branding.

The first speaker of the afternoon was Amy Harkin, a UCLA Anderson 2007 grad. She discussed her journey to business school and her career path since graduating. After working at Mattel for 7 years, Amy became CEO of her own direct-to-consumer marketing and sales platform called All Things in Moderation. She spent a lot of time talking about self-reflection and recognition of when it is time to leave a job.  One of the ways she posed this idea was to think “do I want my boss’ job?” If the answer is no, then you should most likely re-think where you are in your career. Interesting food for thought.

Our second speaker was Meryl Holland, who also runs her own business, but focuses on personal branding for people and companies. She led a workshop on personal branding, which involved flipping through magazines for words that “define” you. She also suggested interviewing stakeholders (i.e. family members, close friends) to gain insight into how others see you. Definitely a good interview prep question!

Overall, it was a fun afternoon meeting some inspiring and successful women! Click here learn more about the WBC and other clubs at UCLA Anderson.
